Leadership awards

The Climate Alliance Business Leadership Awards recognise Australian business executives and organisations that have demonstrated leadership by addressing the opportunities or risks presented by climate change. The awards celebrate the achievements of Australia’s Boards, Directors, Executives and Company Secretaries through the award categories of:

  • Board Leadership of the Year

  • Risk Manager of the Year (including Company Secretary and CRO)

  • Business Leader of the Year

  • Small Company Leadership of the Year (including Innovator/Exporter and start-up)

In previous years, Climate Alliance has recognised the efforts of notable organisations such as the NAB, Origin, Sydney Water and others.

The Leadership Awards are the premier platform for the recognition of Australian business leaders in this area and the award will consist of:

  • A trophy

  • Coverage in the Climate Alliance newsletter and website

  • Media coverage

  • Recognition at our National Conference

The Leadership Award nominations for 2020 will close on 9th November 2020.

Categories and evaluation criteria

1. Board Leadership of the Year 

The Board of a listed or unlisted company based and trading in Australia that has made a noteworthy contribution during the last year and has demonstrated outstanding leadership over this period. 

Criteria to be used in assessing the Board Leadership of the year award include: 

  • Demonstrable commitment to manage the risks and/or opportunities of climate change across the company

  • Provides a positive role model for other Boards

  • Takes a leadership role in climate response in the business community

  • Provides exemplary leadership for the company’s executive

2. Risk Manager of the Year

A Risk Manager (including Company Secretary and CRO) of a listed or unlisted company based and trading in Australia that has made a noteworthy contribution during the last year and has demonstrated outstanding leadership over this period.

Criteria to be used for assessing the Risk Manager award of the year include:

  • Demonstrated commitment to improving governance in the area of climate change

  • Has through the position of Risk Manager helped the Board address the risks presented by climate change

  • Provides a positive role model for other Risk Managers

  • Leads through action.

3. Business Leader of the Year 

A director or executive of a listed or unlisted company based and trading in Australia that has made a noteworthy contribution during the last year and has demonstrated outstanding leadership over this period. 

Criteria to be used for assessing the Business Leader award of the year includes: 

  • Demonstrable commitment to managing the risks and/or opportunities of climate change

  • Is active in the wider business community to increase awareness of the issues associated with climate change

  • Provides a positive role model for other business leaders

  • Leads through action

4. Small Company Leadership of the Year 

Any small Australian listed or unlisted company that has developed an innovative product or service that can be shown to be an effective alternative to “business as usual” or is a market leader. 

Criteria to be used for assessing the Small Company Leadership of the Year award includes: 

  • Creator of an innovative product or service that addresses the challenges of climate change

  • The product or service must be available in the marketplace now

  • That provides demonstrable benefits to the wider community

  • Leader in the field

  • Favourable consideration will be given to businesses that target the export market
