Enormous forces of nature which create volcanic eruptions here in Iceland are, for the first time since modern aviation and modern transport systems were created after the Second World War, showing the helplessness of our technology with respect to these enormous forces," Iceland's president Olafur Grimsson said.
Mr Grimsson says societies and transport systems need to better prepare themselves for such events, which history and science say will happen again.
